So what you are saying is that prior to 1972 and the creation of the Department
of Education and all the other ballooning bureaucracies of the Federal Government, research was never done? Are you intimating that when the federal government hands out taxpayer funds like Halloween candy it is the same as when Chevron, Microsoft, or Dow partner with universities to do the same thing. I have news for you, the big difference between getting $25 million and $325 million is that $300 million isn't stealing from the taxpayers. As for legitimate research that means something, BYU gets hundreds of millions in private research grants. BYU is beholden to produce results because that money usually needs to actually confirm or reject a commercially viable hypothesis of some form that comes at the base of every grant.

Now if you want to brag about being a part of the problem bankrupting the nation, then fine. Do So. Nowhere in my earlier post did I differentiate between funding sources. YOU foolishly brought up the enormous amount of waste that is squandered through the money laundering machines called the DOE and other federal agencies (DOE, DOC, FDA, BLM, etc.).

What irks most business people most is this ignorant notion that ONLY government is interested in advancing society. As I mentioned in another post below, Governments more often than not want in on the profit from the get go. Patent Law designed to protect the rights of the developer are also conveniently used by governments to tract profit and tax it. To think the world would not have better airplanes, roads, ships, computers, software, medicine without government's boot-print on the neck of creation is simply one of the most ridiculous and misguided idiocies I've ever heard in my life. Only a super Keynesian Socialist or Marxist could possibly believe such drivel and frankly, bull excrement.

Governments do NOT produce anything. They DO HOWEVER license and tax; or they provide deeply rooted seed funds of other people's money to get in on the profit. Governments are not benign as our founders proclaimed constantly. Governments are always prone to grow and inhabit space. Government is constantly attempting to expand and solidify more power. That UTAH is beholden to government is not something to brag about. If I were the President I would move hard and fast to reverse the trends of the last three decades that place the government in the position of seed financing any enterprise. Prior to the 1970's private corporations out of their competitive nature were ALWAYS looking to push the envelope of discovery through research and development, mostly in their own labs. Government and Education began to supplant that by taxing, taking and seriously reducing the tax credits and deductions that can be taken by private sector firms.

Why?

Tell me why government felt it so important to compete with the private sector for power over research. Was it so it could require non-scientific outcomes like the ridiculous claims of Human caused Global Warming (just one of dozens of examples of a hoax perpetrated by government funded research that started with a political agenda and power consolidation)? How about destruction of the OZONE Layer. There isn't a single rational study that said the infinitesimally small amount of heavy chlorofluorocarbons released at ground level could ever have an effect on the O3 layer in the upper troposphere. But that did result in huge changes in technology, huge changes in plants and equipment and big money commerce with resulting taxation that all benefited the federal government. That it was a waste didn't matter.

What happens in a 3x3x6 foot plastic model in a laboratory is not the same as what happens in the atmosphere. Poorly trained students with social science backgrounds immediately soaked up the "Sky is falling" crap spewed by the left and government funded think tanks, even though common astrophysicists could point to the Sun's 11 year electromagnetic cycle, match it with the earth's magnetic field and predict as well as document the expansion and contraction of the polar O3 layers like clockwork.

The bottom line is, you have an opinion that a state funded university that is not independent and closely tied to the government tit is somehow superior to one that is not...is frightening and naive. I and probably a vast majority of those who read this logically believe that government does not have betterment of the people at heart, just expanding power. To the extend the U of U is dependent upon government for Survival bothers me. BYU is clearly capable of doing similar things. BYU never founded a medical school because it was always felt Utah's was sufficient for the state. Do not assume that will last forever.

Maybe it is time for BYU to start contemplating an expansion of its College of Bioscience to venture into the lone medical field from which it has held back. Does anyone think that if the LDS church decided to dive into that it wouldn't be a top ranked school fairly quickly. Utah has had a law school since 1913 and it never gets ranked above about 45. The J Ruben Clark school founded at BYU in the mid 70's never ranks lower than about 32-33. I think if BYU wanted to add schools or Architecture and Medicine and compete against UTAH, it would not take more than about a decade to get to where UTAH is and frankly, without the government tit priming the pump.
