The American Association of University Professors published a 68 page report in the Sept-Oct 1997 issue of ACADEME. In the summation it states at BYU "infringements on academic freedom are distressingly common and that the climate for academic freedom is distressingly poor."
I am not saying that it is true or false, but it is out there and I guarantee the presidents of the PAC 10 were aware of it when deciding to expand. If you impinge on academic freedom for religious reasons or for political reasons you are still violating academic freedom and university presidents take a very negative view of that. I wouldn't call it a case of religious bigotry.
