Care of the child should be the issue and I have never had an issue with a
mother obviously taking care of those needs.

We have had 6 boys and all nursed between 18 and 36 months. Rarely did we run into any issues because my wife did it unobtrusively and was usually able to be well covered. We had carriers that made it hard to tell she was even nursing. We ignored the rude folks that went out of their way to make an issue out of things and I am sure she noticed some more stares than I did.

However...you can tell when someone is worrying more about an agenda than the care of the child. Obviously your wife doesn't fall into that cateogory.

Secondly...if the kid is old enough to walk around and ask for it, he is also old enough to wait until a more appropriate time.

Just my opinion.
