i think BYU should allow it's players and coaches to play on sunday. many current athletes play on sunday before BYU...no big deal is made about this. in fact, many coaches recruit players playing on sunday. (i had 2 family members fit this distinction)
some have the chance to play on sunday after BYU...no big deal is made about this. in fact BYU implicitly supports sunday-play professional athletes by building an entire shrine to them in our athletics building.
many other LDS providers work on sunday...no big deal is made about it.
the LDS population at large is taught to keep the sabbath day holy but is left to their own merits when making decisions. many "worthy" temple-recommend holding members of the church play sports on sunday and/or work on sunday. in an ideal world we wouldn't. we do not live in an ideal world.
BYU's strict adherence to "no sunday" play is one of many examples, IMHO, of BYU enforcing a "higher law" than that espoused by the church it supposedly represents. (see parts of honor code, no caffeine on campus, etc)
if we can trust and support athletes before and after BYU that decide to play on sunday, we surely could do so while they wear BYU laundry. the conflicting stance is confusing at best and hypocritical at worst. it has likely cost BYU several chances to get into the P12 and B12 and ironically, as BYU tries to be a light to the world, dim their light forever as they are relegated to G5 status permanently
