My sons MP sent a letter
Strongly discouraging us from picking him up. At the start of his mission
He did not forbid it, and in fact gave some guidelines to follow if we made the choice to do so.
However he did strongly discourage us, in referenced some handbook stuff that appeared to lean that way as well.
In the end, my son didn't want to have us pick him up.

I can tell you that it is up to the MP. The church discourages it because their missions aren't over
