If you have top end talent that gets hurt and then that depth comes into play. For instance Utah had a ton of QB "depth" the last couple of years, every single one of them would have been good "depth" guys. But not a single one of them was a top end talent and so all that depth was really not much to brag about.
You have to have excellent talent at the top and good talent through the middle and bottom, that is when "depth" actually makes a difference. What BYU needs is that some of the guys that were actual starters for them the last several years become the "depth" and that the new starters are top end.
