What does it matter if you have a bunch of good players but no real studs? "Depth" means that you have capable players that can give your starters some rest or if a starter is injured or not performing they can come in and perform to a level good enough that the team still performs well overall. But you only really have "depth" if your top end players are really good. If your top end players are not very good then your next tier are even worse.
So BYU needs to improve at the top end as well as in their depth. It doesn't do a bit of good to have depth if you're not all that good up top.
For the last several years a good portion of BYU's starters should really have been guys that were giving them "depth" and not been the guys playing every down, especially on the lines. Skill guys have mostly been decent enough but the lines lacked top end talent so the starters have been have been better as "depth".
What's "crazy" is not being able to understand that having better talent at the top end creates more "depth" throughout the roster.
