Suggesting any form of a "depth ONLY matters when..."
There is no only. Depth always matters. You seem to have this idea that it's only 22 guys out there playing unless there's an injury. That's silly, especially for certain positions. That's the only aspect of your post I was talking about.

As for the rest, yes of course it should improve overall with the starters. At the same time, BYU hasn't had a ton of issues with starting lineups the last few years. You have a few here and there, but the whole thing with injuries and departures is that they always exist. Depth ALWAYS matters because anything can (and will) happen to anyone at any time. They hardly have a problem filling out the starting lineups as far as a percentage.

Those depth guys are always needed and BYU fixes that in the EASIEST and most reasonable way by fixing that portion of their recruiting classes. It's not realistic to expect 5-8 4-star guys every year. It IS realistic to expect them to be able to round out classes with higher caliber guys out of the 15-20 who aren't higher end. Meaning BYU needs to look like the TCU's and Wisconsin's and Louisville's and Utah's and others who land 16-20 3-star solid athletes with more athletic potential. Rather than rounding it out with 10-15 2-star guys.

Yeah they could improve the top end, but realistically it's not going to be a huge jump. And I'm talking a jump from these last few classes, not classes like 2013 where obviously they needed a huge jump. Very top end guys, that's only marginally going to change. Learning how to fill out the REST of your class is much easier and crucial.
