They didn't know what the policy was, but they suspected they'd be reported
Their suspicions were usually confirmed, at least under the old policy.
I do think BYU is safer than many institutions (though the degree to which that is attributable to the Honor Code and its enforcement, and the degree to which is can be attributed to a student body overwhelmingly made up of LDS students who would live in accordance with their religion), but i welcome any opportunities to remedy those instances where it was not as safe as it could be.
