As a current NP student, I can tell you that the issues are twofold: NP programs provide less than adequate education and NP programs are more interested in making money than creating competent practitioners.
I’m focusing on psychiatry and I know that’s a niche. I can’t speak for ALL programs and students. But I can tell you there needs to be a higher barrier to entry for NP students. The entry requirements are just too low, which allows unqualified applicants to get into the programs. Then the programs don’t want anyone to fail out, so some people skate by.
It’s frustrating. Thank you to those of you who’ve said that not all mid levels are bad. Some are and I get that. Hopefully there will be positive changes before the healthcare world is even more flooded with underprepared graduates.
