There is definitely a place for the NP/PA. I think what Virginia Ute and IFB said above makes sense. You are being used to make money for people/organizations and put in positions you shouldn't be in.
That being said, it seems like your governing boards are pushing for more and more autonomy which I think is pretty scary. Any practitioner practicing solo (what it seems like the independent practicing NPs tend to do) is at a disadvantage without someone to ask a 2nd opinion on or bounce things off of. I've seen NPs come right out of school and start their own solo primary care clinic. That's just nuts.
