Glad I missed those threads the other day. Oh man don’t get me started on Press Gainey. Whoever’s idea it was to
emphasize that and tie it to reimbursement needs to be punched in the face.

I fought an ER bill for my wife for over a year with the physicians office.

Dang, exact same thing. We paid the $300 but wish we would've fought it

The issue is your insurance company.

Yup this thread is sad, so much misguided and misdirected hate in this thread.

Yep.. but it’s the doctors fault! Those guys are so arrogant and greedy
cougfanz
7/16/21 7:03am
Haha I have worked in both of those scenarios and that’s so spot on it’s sad.

Serious question - and I know you're pointing out many and more much broader

Yes and no. You’re right most are still getting paid well per hour

Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

The issue is that nobody bothers telling the patient that they're on the hook
Ungoy
7/16/21 8:15am
Just to clarify the ER doc also doesn’t know what insurance you have
cougfanz
7/16/21 8:20am
Also it would be illegal to check insurance at the door and redirect people to other ERs. Huge EMTALA violation.
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 8:22am
I'm not saying it's the just the docs fault.
Ungoy
7/16/21 8:40am
Doctors are patients too. We all get it. With the new law I’m guessing
cougfanz
7/16/21 8:48am
Right. My anger was not directed at the doctor who treated my wife, but rather
Ungoy

You mean a cashier at Walmart who happens to be working for Target and you
Murray
7/16/21 9:27am
Oh I get it from a patient side. It’s incredibly frustrating. But I’m telling you that nobody can check your insurance
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 8:56am
I understand that completely, but in this time of electronic communication
Ungoy
7/16/21 8:29am
Agree. Billing is also the last thing on your doctors mind as well. But again
cougfanz
7/16/21 8:50am
The computer does tell you that. It says “out of network” on the patient’s chart.
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 9:02am
Correction: it tells the hospital staff that. Nobody relays that to the patient.
Ungoy
7/16/21 9:16am
Did you read the second sentence of my post? It can’t even be implied.
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 9:19am
I did. I get it. I'm glad there is a new law coming
Ungoy
7/16/21 9:21am
Don't get your hopes up about the new law....
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 10:02am
Unfortunately, what all this does in the end is encourage people not to seek
Ungoy
7/16/21 10:12am
Yup and that’s exactly the attitude your insurance company is looking to foster with this situation.
Virginia Ute
7/16/21 11:33am
Universal Healthcare isn't the answer either.

What about non-profit insurance funds, like Germany?

I like the idea. Somethin has got to give.
Virginia Ute

Absolutely agree. Many complain about other healthcare systems, but w/ insurance
Doogal McCougar
7/16/21 8:53am
Every healthcare system has its issues. I'm not sure what is a good fix.

The thief here is the person receiving care and not paying for it. Imagine you

Not a great comparison. If this were an elective procedure...or even non-urgent

Bad analogy.

And yet, you didn't pay. You cheated a doctor of money that they were owed.

They had an obligation to provide details of the situation and chose not to.

How is it “balance billing” when $0 has been paid?

He could have Out of Network coverage where more than $0 was paid.
