He should document the crap out of everything he does. This includes:

keeping all email correspondence, documenting conversations with co-workers and boss, documenting his work, etc. If conversations with the boss are had, make sure to have the boss send an email detailing the conversation, if he will.

FIL should have simply answered "NO, I have no plans." Too late now.
