Your assumptions are ludicrous
Age discrimination is rampant in the high tech field.
My company has a company-wide age discrimination policy which they use to promote unqualified youngsters simply because of their age. It's called "Next Gen".
My boss barely 25 yrs old, 3 years out of college and literally knows nothing, yet she was promoted to lead a team with experienced male programmers who have an average of 25 years in the industry. Most of us have probably forgotten more about programming than she will ever know, and we are constantly having to bail her out of foolish mistakes.

The old guy is being selfish, imo. He knows they want him to retire, but he refuses and from the sounds of it
