In my experience, GE doesn't get treated that differently at customs.

Immigration is a different deal, you pretty much get waved through every time. For customs they do have a separate line, but that's about it: vast majority of cases you just walk by on either line. I've been sent to "random" secondary inspection at about the same rate as GE as I did when I was not GE.
