Is it worth it to play for absolutely nothing right now?
No teams are dying slow deaths in the G5. They are making more money each and every year, certainly not at the speed of P5s but they are making more and more money. Heck, there are a few G5s that make more money than BYU does.

And clearly, the MWC is not what it used to be. But right now that is what the National Media promotes. You have PLENTY of examples to show that the BSUs and UCFs of the world (albeit playing weaker schedules) make the national hype and get recognized. A winning program is more important (nationally) than some perennial 8-5 or 7-6 Indy football program.

It is insane for you all to think that G5 would be the end of BYU. Our recruiting is the exact same if not worse since going Indy, nothing changed with the move and nothing meaningful will change if we did.

Yes, P5s are moving further and further ahead, but they are doing that regardless of where BYU sits. As mentioned, there are G5 teams making more money than BYU so we are still trying to keep up with other schools that are "below" us. Indy gives us slightly more money than being a G5 school would and there is data to reflect that many here on CB have provided.

As all of this is strictly hypothetical, the discussion doesn't really matter. There is no decision on the table (that I or anyone else is aware of) of BYU returning to a G5 conference. So we can debate all day long. But what we do know is that Indy has done nothing beneficial for the program in any meaningful way. Yes, we are getting slightly more money (and hopefully more when the contract comes up for renewal, but that isn't a guarantee) and we are on national TV more which is great for fans. But our on the field product is no better, our recruiting is no better, and our ROI is worse. If you feed more exposure and more money into a program, you'd expect an increased % of ROI and there hasn't been any at all in any meaningful statistical way. So we will continue down the path of status quo where increasingly fewer fans fill the stadium, fans lose interest after Septemeber and more and more folks stop buying season tickets and we truly die a slow death, because we have proof we are trending that direction now.
