It's true- Huntley has suffered injuries in both his seasons as a starter. (2018 was season-ending. 2017 was not.) I'd like to trust Whit- that Huntley's added weight/muscle will make him a little more hardy, and less prone to injury. I'm also inclined to trust Ludwig, when he says that his scheme will also make Huntley less injury-prone. The fact is- Huntley still likes to take off, and go for those extra yards, and he could very well suffer an injury. That would suck for Utah, and as a Ute fan, I hope it doesn't happen. Jason Shelley is not as good. Drew Lisk isn't close. And Cam Rising- despite being a 4-star recruit- is a total mystery. And that's IF he even receives a waiver to play. (Utah has submitted an application for a waiver, that would make him eligible immediately.)
The funny thing is... Utah isn't the only team to have a history of injured QB's.
2010: Riley Nelson- shoulder
2012: Riley Nelson- back/Taysom Hill- LCL
2014: Taysom Hill- broken leg
2015: Taysom Hill- Lisfranc (Week 1)
2016: Taysom Hill- elbow strain
2017: Tanner Mangum- ankle, Achilles/Hoge- toe
Taysom Hill had 4 season-ending injuries- 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016. In 2015, it occurred during Week 1. Fortunately, we had Tanner Mangum- who was better than average- most games.
In 2019, BYU's first four games include the two best defenses in the PAC-12, a decent SEC, and the USC Trojans- who might be struggling compared to what people expect from them- but who also have some elite talent- especially on their D-Line.
So, as a BYU fan, I wouldn't be too worried about injuries at Utah. Yeah, it would suck for Utah to lose Huntley. All three backups are below his talent level. And yet, Shelley was still good enough to get Utah to the conference championship. (Not good enough to win it.)
If something should happen to Wilson, though- a 6'3", 200lb, 19-year-old, coming off a shoulder surgery- the drop in talent is colossal. A 9-3/8-4 season could easily become 4-8/3-9.
As someone who attended both schools, and cheers for both teams, (though more for Utah), I hope both teams stay healthy.
