I'm shocked that it's still in the Handbook at all
To me it is so wildly inappropriate to talk to a guy who has no training (medical or therapeutic) at all about the sexual well being and dynamic between me and my wife. I don't want to go off on a tangent, but in light of the scrutiny the church is under for bishops interviews I can't believe they recommend talking to your bishop about this.

Despite the lack of training there is just so much inconsistency. What if I go in and my bishop is like the SP mentioned above who has a very liberal view of it and has perhaps even had one himself. He has no problem with it and councils that it's all good. But what if I have a bishop who has a different interpretation and he had been told by his bishop at some point that it should only be done in extreme circumstances of health and he sticks to that. I'm going to get completely different council from him.

It should basically come down to a decision between a husband and wife and God if they choose. I don't understand the need for an intermediary in such an decision. The church is all about developing a personal relationship with God, but then feel it's appropriate to insert themselves into something so personal and intimate.
