On a more serious note, the real reason is budgetary
BYU operates a self-sufficient Athletic Department.
We raise money for capital projects and don’t go into debt.
We operate in the black, and not the red.
If our ESPN contract goes up significantly, we will have more money for coaches, academic support, etc.
