If you've got an ipad - give it to the dang kid!
I don't generally subscribe to the parenting method of giving your kid anything they want.
But in public places during a one-off situation (we never traveled or flew much with kids) I'm all about giving the kid whatever it is that they need in order to get them to not be a distraction or annoyance to others around us. Treats, candy, games, toys, ipads - whatever. It's theirs for the duration of the temporary situation.
I might see things differently if it's something you do much more regularly. Like I'm not giving in to every and any demand my child might have during Sacrament Meeting each week. Then again, unlike being in an airplane, I can take him/her out if necessary.
