There is a demand for rental housing and it serves that. So you think all
renters have to live in apartments??? If there was not a demand for single family rentals then the market wouldn't exist. Your premise that it doesn't benefit society is strange and could be applied to all sorts of businesses.

The housing crash was primarily caused by pushing groups into home ownership that weren't previously qualified to afford it and then started a default on mortgages. Investors were the only people buying houses for a while or things would have fallen even more.
