People may not like the fact that in his world, football is not first. In spite of it being his profession, and a profession he's had success in, football is not first to him.
He sees his role in this world as a leader and builder of young men. He got to witness first hand for 2 years under Gary Crowton a coach for whom football was first. And there's nothing wrong with that.
But that's not the way a program should be handled at a university like BYU...and a football first university would never be a good fit for a coach like Bronco.
There was a reason he talked about service academies as the kinds of places he might enjoy coaching.
For him, football was the path he chose to try to instill life long qualities in young man that would endure long after their playing days had ended.
Frankly, he's better at that than he is at coaching. He's a Grade A life coach. And still a pretty good football coach.
Many won't want to hear it, and their styles are completely different in how they mentor, but I would bet you my life's worth that if you asked Kalani Sitake whether football is first for him, it would not be. He coaches at BYU. It can't be.
