he also stated numerous times he wasn't going to be a lifer like Lavell was...
...and expected he'd be at BYU for about 10 yrs (he went 11). He interviewed for other head coaching jobs along the way and had reportedly turned down an offer to coach UCLA early on after we went Indy and was rumored to have been offered the Colorado job as well. He was pretty particular about the kind of school he wanted to coach at next and had a really short list of potential schools. In 2015 one of those schools came calling and he felt the timing was right for him.

As for his relationship struggles with the fans and with many legacy players from the Lavell era, you get out of life what you put into it, you reap what you sow or to put it in an Alaskan vernacular "you eat what you kill". Those problems he had didn't occur despite him. They were an outcome because of choices he made, actions he took.
