...Crowton wanted to approach the HC with players. I don't buy it that he was helpless or had his hands tied. That's a pretty weak excuse. No doubt there was a fervent desire to upgrade the talent but Crowton was heavily focused on coaching the offense and wasn't very involved with the defense. It's normal for the head coach to get all the blame, the buck stopped with Crowton but he wasn't alone. The assistant coaching staff play a huge role in the success or failings of a team.
Look at how badly things went in 2017 with our offense when Kalani had hired such an inexperienced staff to start his tenure at BYU. It became a disaster quickly. Then look how quickly things turned around starting in 2018 thru 2020 when KS replaced those coaches with a very experienced and accomplished group of assistants (Grimey, Arod, Fesi, Clark, Steward and Pugh). The difference was night and day and we saw changes occur almost overnight.
