by example, when I go diving in the Philippines, I try to be genuine, but also generous. On one of our first trips, we
had a boat man, who for 500 pesos ($10) took us out for the day, let us off to walk a sand bar, snorkel, and explore a small island. While we were lounging around we asked him about his eye, he had pink eye in one eye, pretty bad... he said he couldn't afford to see a doctor, they were saving money for his sons heart surgery. He said it was okay, the salt in the sea when he dove each day to spear a fish for their dinner helped to keep it from getting worse. I had a small tube of Neosporin I gave him, and told him to put just a small dab in his eye and blink before he slept.

But more, as we talked about the fish he speared, he said it would be a good dinner today. They had meat with their rice. We asked him how much he made from being a boat man, and he told us he got 100 pesos. 100 pesos was his daily goal, because it made his wife happy.

Imagine living off of 3000 pesos ($60) a month? Obviously he gets tips, but Bohol isn't a top visitor spot, so his average isn't going to be much higher than 5000 a month ($100). Imagine how long he has to save to get help for a son with a heart condition.

Even divemasters we know, make about 15,000 pesos a month ($300) which is living the high life for most of them.

All this is to say, there are people living on far less, with much less, and who are happy, but are not nearly as blessed as most of the worst poor in the US.
