The decision makers at BYU do not have the goal of hiring or recruiting the best. This is not a slam on BYU coaches and players, we just know BYU just doesn’t do that. I think an interesting stat is no conference tournament wins in 22 years, and limited NCAA success. In all those years they couldn’t/didn’t put together one team that was built for tournament success, and winning 3 games in 3 nights like the MWC tournament. They were almost always tired and just out matched in that championship game. That means the other team has built themselves for that and BYU hasn’t.
BYU obviously has other goals and desires for who they let in to school and who represents them. Other goals go by the wayside sometimes. It will be interesting to see if Pope is able to do anything different. Maybe being in such a tough conference can free him up to build a roster suited for exhausting tournament play, and focus on that.
