I’ll be the contrarian for debate sake. I gave my young kid an iPhone as soon as.
He went to practice and they didn’t have a consistent end time. Sometimes practice will be an hour and a half and sometimes 2 1/2 hours. It was much easier when he could call or text us.

He could have done that with any phone of course but we had one of my old iPhones sitting around the house and it was only 10 bucks to add an additional line.

One of the things I really like about iPhones is it is easy to control screen time. You can do it by app or by communication or by almost whatever you want.

My son is 18 years old today and he asked us to keep a screen time limit on his Instagram even though he’s in college. He frequently will ask for more time, and his mom and me have to approve That this is completely a self imposed limit because he realize how much of a time sink it can be. When some of his college teamates made fun of him in the locker room, he explained it was a self impose limit and they said oh that’s actually a good idea. He is the same kid that had an iPhone when he was 10?

I agree that the majority of people give their kids too much access too early when in reality it’s a case by case basis on when kids are ready. I try not to judge as people have enough problems to deal with, including myself.
