like BYU, CSU, AFA, SDSU, Oreg State, CU, Arizona — aren't playing in high profile games. Maybe hear or there. Not every year.
They are not playing in front of 5 million people unless it's their rival. When they play USC or Oregon, the networks are choosing other games.
If one of them was playing top 10-15 football like Utah, I suspect a Utah-CU or BYU game could draw 4 million+.
But none of those guys are at that level right now. It says more about how unique Utah is playing at a markedly higher level than their peers and their brand.
Even comparable P5s in other conferences like Minnesota, Iowa State, Kansas, Northwestern, GA Tech, Miss State...you're not seeing any other lower tier program playing in 4 consecutive CCGs or winning back-to-back titles.
But the point stays the same...it's not the brand for either team that's pulling, it's the stakes, implications and overall intrigue or competitiveness of the game. Why TCU-KSU drew 8 million +.
Or even Utah-CU, when CU was playing well, it drew over 3 million in 2016.
