I don't buy the "Big 12 was too unstable" argument.
After seeing TCU and Boise and SDSU conference hop like crazy during all of this, BYU could have gone to the Big 12, football only or full member, and if the Big 12 fell apart, just bailed again.
I think BYU over-valued themselves, tried to hard bargain, and the Big 12 bailed for money, stability and easier to deal with members (TCU, WVU).
