The recent debate about rape led me to finally post on the board, and I figured while I'm on a roll i might as well address another angle of the HCO office that may not have been completely hashed over a few times ha.

The honor code office are the saducees and pharisees, hear me out. What did these two groups do? They looked at commandments that were very clear and then set up lots of rules and fences around the commandments that weren't necessarily the lord's will. Then had punishments to go with those extracurricular rules that they created themselves.

The HCO does the same thing. They have some principles that are base commandments that are definitely sin e.g. no sex, drinking, drugs, cheating, etc. I'm fine with having them provide strict rules on that. But then to make rules that are preventative in nature like not having a girl in your room, curfews, etc is somewhat ridiculous. These are not inherently sins, but the HCO treats them as if it is a sin an punishes us for them. What did the Sanhedrin do? Hey keep the Sabbath day holy, this means no handling money, can't take a certain amount of steps, no preparing a certain amount of food, but that is not what the lord said. But yet they had a whole set of rules and punishments for standards they took the audacity to make themselves and then treat it as a sin. The honor code office needs to get out of the micromanaging business and controlling people by trying to control their situations and circumstances they can find themselves in. Treat the students like adults that can choose and exercise agency responsibly. We don't need a roommate to be my baby sitter and then tattle for breaking these fence type rules that actually aren't strictly gospel based. I also strongly think a 3rd party should not be involved in repentance that has no priesthood keys or authority for revelation in a student's situation. It is eerily reminiscent of Satan's plan to control us and our situations in order to prevent even having the possibility of committing sin, I'm sorry i can have a girl alone in my room and even, *gasp* cuddle without committing any sin that is inherently bad.

Anyways just thought i'd throw that nugget out there to chew on. Not bulletproof analogy but just an interesting comparison i had recently thought of.
