The successes do benefit the church
But not to the same extent that bonehead statements and dishonorable actions harm the church. In the media when a member does something positive he is not labeled Mormon as often as someone who does something negative.
And ftr I don't hate BYU or it's athletics but I do hate it when fans or players at BYU don't realize they are held to a higher standard. Perception is reality.
