Sure, what you describe happens, by all means. BYU is for an elite group--this happens with any school that has high admission standards and a huge demand. The students need to not get too full of themselves. But I've lived in four wards in the midwest and the BYU grads don't stand out that way.
Not sure what you were expecting from the SDSU situation. Pretty much everyone admitted the refs blew it one way or the other, and BYU benefited, and that it didn't really look good that a BYU guy was involved in the replay stuff--even though that is fairly standard. There was, as you would expect, a bunch of defensiveness when BYU was called out as cheating. I think the whole situation is unfortunate, but when people lodge absurd accusations at you, it is hard to just cower and take it--even though that is pretty much what BYU the institution is doing.
