For me . .
I prayed about it and it wasn't where I was supposed to go. I actually looked at BYU twice (undergrad and for my MBA), got accepted twice and turned them down because I was inspired to go elsewhere.
Also on another level I have a bit of a problem with the HC being more strict than what it takes to get a temple recommend - this may have influenced the above and knowing that I would "kick against the pricks" so to speak.
