They should give referrals to him even if he dislikes BYU and it's ludicrous that they'd lose respect for him because he doesn't like BYU.
Quite frankly, I've never understood how members hate BYU when it is a tithing supported school which brings (mostly) positive exposure to the Church, but it's just as ridiculous to not support a missionary because he's stated that he never really like BYU
