I'd probably see if your son was willing to hit the mission field this year, re apply with his Mission Presidents letter of recommendation. Your son sounds like a leader and would most likely have some leadership experience on the mission. Then you can leave the potential bad apple recommendation in the dust and re apply with all his other achievements.
