It's obvious that he checked the boxes academically. Your thoughts on the
seminary teacher above seem to point to the most likely factor.
Hopefully he doesn't get bitter at the school and subsequently the Church for being treated unfairly. Failure (even when not my fault) has taught me some of the best life lessons.
Maybe his personal influence will have more impact at another school, at least for a while.
