This is well known by pretty much everybody and from my perspective (I could be wrong) acknowledged by the school. They are not hiding the fact that that subject does not enjoy academic freedom. But on many subjects, I think BYU is a beacon of academic freedom that does not exist at other schools.
There are too many schools to count that act and intimate that they have academic freedom when they absolutely do not on a whole host of subjects. I'm talking best of the best schools with little to no academic freedom on large swaths of topics because of taboo, political correctness, and other reasons. They may use other forms of enforcement but the fact is, there is little to no academic freedom to pursue certain lines of inquiry. I'm not saying this is a bad thing but the whole "academic freedom" red herring is so so stupid.
