The practicality is the cost. A large component of the cost of public education
is the compensation paid for labor. It is common to state teachers should be paid more, but when you add the hundreds of thousand and perhaps millions of teachers, the cost increases are tremendous.

Public employees have many benefits that private businesses do not. And after a few years the pay isn't awful. Is it fair? I don't know but it is not as if teachers select the occupation with the surprise of what compensation is. I have heard teachers complain about compensation since the 1960s.So if it unfair, every person selecting the occupation has done so with full knowledge of its shortcomings.
