Someone needs to start standing up for those poor underpaid pediatricians!
Are you kidding?
I honestly DON'T know the answer.
And right now, we're talking about teachers. But who else falls into this area of deserving another look?
There are all kinds of jobs that we SAY we value, but we don't when it comes to pay.
Fresh out of college I worked in Child Welfare. I was supervising families with histories of abuse and tracking kids in foster care. I had a 4 year degree and a license, but was making the same amount of money as one friend (with no degree) who put together gum ball machines for a living, about the same amount as another friend (no degree) who built/repaired pallets for a pallet company, and significantly less than a 3rd friend (no degree) who was throwing chips for Frito Lay for a living.
So - what do we value as a society? Well - obviously we love our gum ball machines and potato chips and believe they are SO much more important than children.
Since we started with teachers - I was earning about the same annually as what teachers earn, but without the 3 months off people like to make a big deal of. About a year in, I learned that if I wanted to apply, I qualified for food stamps. That's ridiculous.
But no - you keep comparing pediatricians to teachers. Because they are obviously living in the same neighborhoods.
