Lake was rated 4-stars by Scout, who list him as the No. 1 cornerback in Utah and the No. 10 cornerback in the west. He was rated 3-stars by Rivals and ESPN (grade of 75). Lake held scholarship offers from BYU, Cal, SDSU, UNLV, Utah, and Weber State. He was also recruited by Alabama, Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado, Florida State, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah State, Vanderbilt, Washington, and Wisconsin. Lake first committed to BYU after his sophomore season (March 30, 2013), and then re-committed to the Cougars on January 30, 2014.
