It's petty! And insecure.
It's like trying to save face, by breaking up with your girlfriend- after she just broke up with you.
Maybe, in situations like this, it might be more gracious to say "You're a good kid, and while we're disappointed, we wish you nothing but good luck." (And then, beat him on the field.) 🙂
