Had the same experience last year
My son had 34 and 3.93.....checked all other extra boxes....was rejected. I met with admissions and in a round about way was told it was the CONTENT of the essays. They weigh those probably more than grades and ACT. We reapplied for Winter and redid all essays and got new recommendations. We talked with each recommender and discussed what BYU was looking for. His first essays were written well, but on reflection he did not come off well. You have to show how the student is well rounded, humble, spiritual, thoughtful, service minded and aligns to the BYU criteria.

We resubmitted for winter and he was accepted and recieved a scholarship.

Look at the CONTENT of the essays my friend. Also prayer helps!
