BYU Sports Nation Lowers Bar for BYU Football
So, I don't listen to BYU Sports Nation regularly, but yesterday evening, I randomly decided to watch the latest episode of that as I ate my TV dinner and a few of the comments by Jarom Jordan perked my attention about BYU football. The subject was BYU scheduling and Jarom was saying how BYU should schedule maybe 4 to 5 P5 per years, which I thought was a reasonable take I can even agree with, but then he says that those who want a tougher schedule schedule nearly filled with P5 teams should be ready to enjoy 7 win seasons at best. He then says in passing that the goal should be 10 win seasons because BYU will never make it to the NY6 bowl and that's just the honest truth. If I remember correctly, he then said somewhere in there in passing that BYU will never be undefeated. Maybe I'm misremembering that last bit and he said BYU will never make the playoffs instead. I don't remember which it was. With each of these comments, I thought it was a bit strange and I even had my jaw dropped and literally laughed out loud. Although Spencer Linton didn't make these blunt comments, with the way they were both speaking, it seemed implicit that both Jarom and Spencer believed that BYU football's goal every season should be to obtain 10+ wins and be ranked at the end of the season. It seems implicitly that they were in a consensus that this was BYU's ceiling in college football. Granted, if the BYU football team can pull that off consistently season after season kinda like Boise State, I would actually be ecstatic, but should the team really stop there?

Now, I concede that Jarom Jordan could very well be right in his assessment that BYU will never be invited to NY6 bowl, be undefeated, make the playoffs, etc., but it just seemed off for him to go out of his way to express that such things will never happen. It's one thing to advocate having a tough balanced schedule mixed with P5s, high performing G5s, in state teams, etc., which I think is reasonable to aim for and a reasonable take, but to publicly say that the team can never achieve certain things is another. Even if you do believe it in your heart of hearts that the football team will never break the glass ceiling, why repeatedly say it out loud as a fan with a public voice?

I'm a huge critic of "cancel culture", so I absolutely don't advocate that Jarom should be fired, have his life ruined, be demoted, etc., whatsoever, but I found his commentary a bit off for a public figure in BYU sports. Imagine Greg Wrubell repeatedly saying that the BYU men's basketball team will never make it to the Final 4 let alone the championship game, they just will never catchup to Gonzaga, 20+ wins should always be the goal and nothing more, etc., as he's interviewed about BYU sports, does play-by-play, etc. I'm sure that'll grab lots of attention and that some will inevitably tell him to knock it off.
