Obviously times have changed, but the idea that the route to former glory is to load up on P5s just doesn’t line up with reality. We have never been successful when doing so because no matter how much we’d like to think otherwise, we aren’t a P5 ourselves.
We don’t have the talent of a P5.
We don’t have the resources of a P5.
We don’t pay P5 salaries for coaches.
We don’t have P5 facilities.
We don’t invest in recruiting like a P5.
And perhaps most importantly, we don’t have the same commitment from the institution to do anything it takes to be successful, like good P5s do.
Yet when someone suggests that maybe the secret sauce for BYU success is to pummel the little guys and then punch above our weight a handful of times per year (just like we always did during the glory years) they are called a defeatist. So interesting.
