This goes to scheme. This defense is not being called for quick 3 & outs. It's the bend but don't break approach.
This approach leads to longer more sustained drives and naturally keeps the defense on the field longer even against inferior teams.
Offense needs a rhythm to the game. It's tough to get that when you are sitting on the sidelines for 20 minutes between possessions.
