Assuming points scored per possession is a good KPI, TOP should matter in that it gives an offense/defense who is
controlling the game more or fewer opportunities to score.

So in that sense, TOP and rhythm are critical in my view. Does it matter only 5% vs 50% that you are ascribing above? Not quite sure. But I think it's much more relevant than 5%.

The time of possession statistic is all about control. It’s a remarkably good indicator of how well the offensive team is controlling the game vs. the defense.

So yes, both play a role and need to help each other out. Completely agree.

Where I diverge, is that our defensive schema is designed to allow the opponents more leeway to move the ball down the field in the hopes that they make a mistake along the way ceding TOP as they go. It's not an aggressively designed defense to stop the other teams without yardage gained.

This creates fewer opportunities for the offense to score and to get into the flow of the game.
