It's fascinating. The BYU mindset is something like this
Yeah, Utah has been in several big games that have huge ratings... and they've done it consistently year after year...but those don't count because they're big games against top opponents on national stages and Utah is ranked in the top 15.
ASU, CU and BYU aren't getting to those national stages and not ranked as high so they're not apples to apples. The only metric is take Utah's worst games that are part of the required 3 Pac-12 annual games, and make that the norm.
The problem with that thinking is the networks want the big games. They'll make more money on 1 Utah vs. Oregon or USC CCG than on 7 regular season games. So the teams that create compelling games year after year that draw a massive national audience are going to be markedly more valuable.
Infused in that thinking is the awkward fan base size as the only relevant metric for viewership. It's not even close. tOSU has 9 million fans and 20 million viewed the Utah- OSU bowl. The key is getting games that can draw 11 million viewers from other fanbases.
