I know distance runners are often coached off missions like this.
Fall XC - redshirt because they aren’t competitive yet. FB players fit here, timing wise.
Winter indoor track - on the team and compete, but not that good yet. They’ve had about 4-5 months of coached training by now. BB players wood fit in this camp.
Spring track - Assuming they didn’t get injured ramping up their mileage (lots do), you can start to tell who has it.
Fall XC the following year - big time competitors are finally showing their ability and are important contributors.
