I had a sister attending BYU who, to this day, will tell you the only reason
she is still alive is because someone turned her in. I'll spare the gritty details, to this day, my sister doesn't know who turned her in, but to her it does not matter. She will tell you that she had no intention of stopping her behavior before she was called to report to the HC office.

As a result of her indiscretions, she was kicked out of BYU. Her experience with the HC office was firm, but appreciated. She was given the option to return if she could get herself right with her ecclesiastical leader. You hear her version of what she went through during the next 5 months and you're reminded of the harrowing story of Alma. She eventually made a full turnaround and is now doing well.

We live in a world where it is easier (and more culturally accepted) to look the other way than to try and help other people live the way they know they should. Coming to BYU and choosing to live the HC is a choice, yet we treat the aspects of entrance as obligations. I know this will rub some the wrong way, but you're being obtuse if you look at the HC as an obligation. Sadly there are numerous cases where it is blatantly abused. But you are not helping yourself or the person involved if you knowingly allow them to willingly reject the commitments they have made. To turn a blind eye is selfish. In most cases it's harder to turn a person in than to allow them to continue down the path they are going.

I don't agree with those who get joy out of turning others into the HC office. And I do believe the HC office goes over the top occasionally with their rules enforcement. I love BYU and it is a great place to attend. You don't understand the gospel if you believe that the best things we can do for the students and athletes of BYU is to sit idly by while they fail to live up to their commitments.
