I guess I know a different Bronco
As I mentioned above, I can't think of anyone that doesn't make mistakes on the job. I don't disagree with some of your observations. I however, have seen and know of a very personable and fan friendly coach that perhaps you have not been able to see or come to know. Through attendance in meetings, gatherings, away trips, etc. Coach Mendenhall has always been friendly and open to discussion. From walking across a busy lobby to say hi or give a wave and smile as he passed.
I have been around both coach Edwards and Mendenhall. Coach Edwards since 1979 and coach Mendenhall since his arrival. I have seen great strides as he has fully grasped the meaning of what it is to be a coach at BYU. Remember, Coach Edwards had the luxury of taking over BYU when football was behind track N field as far as fans were concerned. Bronco took over a national tradition that had faltered.
We understand that in such circumstances scrutiny was much higher for coach Mendenhall than Coach Edwards. You might also recall that Coach Edwards became upset with callers, he closed practices to the public and fan base. Coach Edwards did not like the call-in segments but it was part of coach Edwards contract.
Coach Edwards grew into the position. Coach Mendenhall was thrown into it. Bronco has grown and will continue to grow just as Edwards grew.
